SkillsUSA Fire Extinguisher Training
Students in several Career and Technical Education Center programs recently received training in the proper use of fire extinguishers courtesy of the OHM BOCES chapter of SkillsUSA.
The training, sponsored by SkillsUSA and led by OHM BOCES fire inspector Richard Holmes, provided students with skills that can be used in their future careers or daily life. The students learned about which fire extinguishers to use for different types of fires and how to effectively put out a fire with them. The class also got hands-on experience deploying the different types of extinguishers to practice putting out a fire.
Students from the New Visions: Health Professions, Nursing Assistant and Automotive technology programs participated in the training along with members of the SkillsUSA Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) team were also present for the training which they can use for their competition documentation book.
“We feel it is imperative that the students learn how to accurately use a fire extinguisher and learn about general fire safety for their own personal safety and for the safety of their peers and coworkers when they are out in the field,” said SkillsUSA Advisor Kim Petronella.
With this training, students have now learned a new skill that has the potential to save lives in any career path they choose.
