SkillsUSA Visits Nation’s Capital
Students and advisors from the OHM BOCES chapter of SkillsUSA recently traveled to Washington D.C. to attend the organization’s annual Washington Leadership Training Institute (WLTI) Conference.
Students Madeline Stell and Jack Barkett, and advisors Mrs. Petronella and Mr. Stratton attended the conference which focused on professionalism, communication and leadership skills. The training also allows members the opportunity to share their SkillsUSA and career and technical experiences with elected officials.
During the trip, Madeline and Jack received the National Statesman Award -- presented to members who demonstrate knowledge and civic awareness, along with an understanding of the SkillsUSA Framework and how to articulate their personal career and technical education (CTE) experience.
While in Washington D.C., the group was able to walk the monuments on the National Mall, visit the Arlington National Ceremony and meet with local Congresswoman Claudia Tenney to discuss the importance of CTE both regionally and nationwide.
Madeline and Jack are now gearing up for the SkillsUSA Fall Leadership Conference being held November 5-9, where they will help teach and educate other New York state students about SkillsUSA.
