Nursing Assistant Fire Extinguisher Training
Students in the Career and Technical Education Center’s Nursing Assistant program recently received training in the proper use of fire extinguishers.
The training, led by OHM BOCES fire inspector Richard Holmes, provided students with skills that can be used in their future careers or daily life. The students learned about which fire extinguishers to use for different types of fires and how to effectively put out a fire with them. The class also got hands-on experience using the different types of extinguishers to practice putting out a “fire,” represented by a five-gallon pail.
The training was especially important for the Nursing Assistant students since fires in healthcare facilities can pose an even greater threat to the life and health of patients and staff. Many people in hospitals or nursing homes aren’t able to leave their beds because of their physical condition or medical status, and healthcare facilities typically contain ample oxygen supplies, volatile chemicals and other drugs that can spread fires and emit deadly fumes into the air.
With this training, students have now learned a new skill that has the potential to save lives in any career path they choose.
