Saturday Showcase

Saturday Showcase 2020 Photo For the eighth year in a row, in celebration of National Career and Technical Education Month, the OHM BOCES Career and Technical Education Center opened its doors to the public for its annual Saturday Showcase.

On Feb. 8, OHM BOCES students had an assortment of projects on display, as well as interactive activities to inform and entertain visitors. The CTE store was open to guests, featuring student-made merchandise such as metal coat racks, wooden candle holders, peg games and decorative corner shelves. The Culinary Program offered cannoli, gourmet soups, and pastries and featured live cooking demonstrations. Salon services included manicures and paraffin wax treatments. Students in the Criminal Justice Program also assisted members of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office in providing NYS Safe Child ID cards, free of charge. Additionally, P-TECH OHM held a new parent informational session for prospective students and their families.

Proceeds from the CTE store will support the Career & Technical Education Center’s SkillsUSA, a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health careers.

“We were thrilled to once again host this showcase to kick off National CTE month,” said David Stayton, principal of the Career & Technical Education Center. “This event continues to be an opportunity for prospective students and the community to view our programs, to observe our students engaged in the practical application of learned skills, and to understand that ‘hands-on’ doesn’t mean ‘minds off’. CTE programs provide students with career pathways linking high school learning with college degrees, industry-recognized certifications, and connections between what they learn in the classroom and the real world.”

The Career and Technical Education Center offers more than 30 programs, including nine New Visions programs, to the OHM BOCES’ 12 component school districts: Brookfield, Clinton, Holland Patent, New York Mills, New Hartford, Oriskany, Remsen, Sauquoit Valley, Utica, Waterville, Westmoreland and Whitesboro.
