Chinese Language and Culture Initiative Celebrates Confucius Day

Confucius Day Performer In recognition of Confucius’ birthday, the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES Chinese Language and Culture Initiative presented a celebration of Chinese culture for area students on September 27 in the Clinton High School Auditorium.

The Confucius Day celebration included a Chinese language and culture trivia competition, Chinese calligraphy workshop, performances by Chinese opera singer Ying Wu and performances by several artists and musicians from the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera (CICO) at Binghamton University.

Confucius Day celebrates the birth of Confucius, a Chinese scholar and social philosopher, whose thoughts and teachings have profoundly influenced Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese life and culture. Traditional Confucius Day ceremonies include musical performances and dancing using ancient instruments, wearing traditional costumes and contemplating the virtues of Confucius.

CICO at Binghamton University is a nonprofit organization jointly formed by Binghamton University and the National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts (NACTA), and is sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing, China. As with all Confucius Institutes around the world, CICO supplies tools and support for teaching Chinese language and culture. Binghamton's Confucius Institute has also established the only performance group in the United States to feature Beijing opera, a unique aspect of their Confucius Institute which plays a major role in the promotion of Chinese opera, performing arts and culture in school and communities nationwide.
