OHM BOCES Students Place at SkillsUSA State Competition
The SkillsUSA chapter at the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison (OHM) BOCES earned several recognitions, including a first place gold medal at this year’s New York State Leadership and Skills Conference in Syracuse recently.
Thirty-two students from the OHM BOCES attended the state conference and displayed exceptional professionalism, leadership, teamwork and technical skills while participating in several competitions. As a result of their hard work and dedication, four students will attend the national conference in Louisville, Ky., in June.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) team won the first place gold medal in the competition. The team is comprised of Logan Bowers, Westmoreland; Shaye Gardinier, New Hartford; and Sophia Roberts, Notre Dame.
Earning the bronze medal in Criminal Justice was Dakota Spicer, Utica City School District.
Also during the conference, Cameron Daub, criminal justice, New Hartford, was named as the individual recipient of the 2019 Presidents Gold Community Service Award for completing more than 650 hours of community service. Daub was the only SkillsUSA member in New York state to receive this honor.
“The Skills USA competition allows our students to not only demonstrate their knowledge and competency but also provides them opportunities to collaborate with business and industry partners and network with peers across the state,” said David Stayton, principal of the Career and Technical Education Center. “The Syracuse competition provides them a platform to showcase their knowledge and skills and network with professionals in the field and other students in similar programs throughout the state.”
The OHM BOCES serves the following component school districts: Brookfield, Clinton, Holland Patent, New Hartford, New York Mills, Oriskany, Remsen, Sauquoit Valley, Utica, Waterville, Westmoreland and Whitesboro.
