OHM BOCES Students Place at SkillsUSA Regional Competition
Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES students received several recognitions, including two first place recognitions, at this year’s Skills USA Area 2 Regional Competition at SUNY Morrisville on Feb. 8, 2019. The OHM BOCES team also won the Area 2 Community Service Project for the third year in a row. The chapter donated 3,540 items to Feed Our Vets.
Competitors demonstrated their talents in such areas as criminal justice, power equipment technology, nurse assisting, advertising and design, masonry, pin design, TV video production, cabinet making and carpentry.
Dakota Spicer, Utica City School District, placed first in the criminal justice category. Also placing first were Kayla Morrell, Clinton Central School District; A’mya Holmes, Utica City School District; and Esmeralda Quiros, Utica City School District in crime scene investigation.
Placing second in the Health and Knowledge Bowl were Amber Smith, Oriskany Central School District; Keri Daly, Whitesboro Central School District; Sidney Hess, Holland Patent Central School District; and Antony Rossi, Oriskany Central School District.
Avelina Kichuk, Whitesboro Central School District, placed second in nurse assisting, and Bret Bowman, New Hartford Central School District, placed second in advertising design.
Alexis Newbury, Utica City School District, serves as the Area 2 Vice President. She was responsible for running the house of delegates and assisting with the awards ceremony during the competition.
“The Skills USA competition allows our students to not only demonstrate their knowledge and competency but also provides them opportunities to collaborate with business and industry partners and network with peers across the region,” said David Stayton, principal of the Career and Technical Education Center. “The regional competition prepares students for the state competition in Syracuse, which will take place in April.”
The OHM BOCES serves the following component school districts: Brookfield, Clinton, Holland Patent, New Hartford, New York Mills, Oriskany, Remsen, Sauquoit Valley, Utica, Waterville, Westmoreland and Whitesboro.
