OHM BOCES to Hold 7th Annual Saturday Showcase

For the seventh year in a row, this February, in celebration of National Career and Technical Education month, the OHM BOCES Career and Technical Education Center will open its doors to the public for its annual Saturday Showcase.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 2 at the OHM BOCES on Middle Settlement Road in New Hartford, N.Y.

OHM BOCES students will have an assortment of projects on display, as well as interactive activities to inform and entertain visitors. The CTE store will be open to guests, featuring student-made merchandise such as wooden candle holders, bottle racks and bluebird boxes. The Culinary Program will offer cannoli, gourmet soups, pulled pork sliders and pastries. Salon services will include braiding, hair wrapping, nail art and paraffin wax treatments. Students in the Criminal Justice Program will be assisting members of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office in providing NYS Safe Child ID cards, free of charge.

Proceeds from the CTE store will support the Career & Technical Education Center’s SkillsUSA, a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health careers.

“We are thrilled to again host this showcase to kick off National CTE month,” said David Stayton, principal of the Career & Technical Education Center. “This event is an opportunity for prospective students and the community to view our programs, to observe our students engaged in the practical application of learned skills, and to understand that ‘hands-on’ doesn’t mean ‘minds off’. CTE programs provide students with career pathways linking high school learning with college degrees, industry recognized certifications, and connections between what they learn in the classroom and the real world.”
