Oneida-Herkimer-Madison (OHM) BOCES District Superintendent Howard Mettelman is a recipient of the 2018 Leading EDGE Award.Mettelman Award

Mr. Mettelman was one of six local leaders and businesses to receive the honor at the 17th Annual Leading EDGE Awards luncheon on May 22 at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Marcy.

Sponsored by Mohawk Valley EDGE, since 1998, the Leading EDGE Awards have recognized companies and individual leaders who have been instrumental in helping grow the Mohawk Valley economy. It is also an annual opportunity to publically applaud the companies and individuals making a true difference in the Mohawk Valley.

“Howard has always been an innovator and strong voice in the educational system in the Mohawk Valley,” New York State Office of General Services Commissioner RoAnn Destito said. “He has contributed so much to building the future of our community and the strength of our young people with his progressive ideas and visionary thinking. I thank him for his service and know that the contributions he made throughout his career will guide BOCES for years to come.”

Mr. Mettelman, who, after 45 years in education is retiring at the end of June, has served as the OHM BOCES district superintendent since April 2004. Prior to his role at BOCES, Mr. Mettelman was superintendent of the Oriskany Central School District for five years and worked at the Madison-Oneida BOCES, Camden Central School District and Notre Dame in Utica.

As district superintendent of the OHM BOCES, Mr. Mettelman serves as both the chief executive officer of the OHM BOCES and Commissioner of Education’s representative for the 12 component school districts in the OHM BOCES region. Over the past 14 years, he has seen the expansion of programs in career and technical education, special education and alternative education. His major accomplishments include initiating a $38.5 million capital project that renovated and expanded the facilities at the OHM BOCES’ Middle Settlement Road campus into a state-of-the-art facility that is currently used to prepare students and adults for both college and careers after they graduate. He also oversaw the creation of the Mandarin Chinese distance learning program that serves more than 700 students in grades six through 12 throughout the state, secured a $5.9 million Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant initiative and, most recently, worked with the OHM BOCES’ 12 component school districts to launch the Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) program permitting students to obtain their Regents diploma and an associate’s degree from Mohawk Valley Community College.

“No one has ever done more for the academic prosperity of this region in the past 40-plus years than Howard Mettelman,” Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said. “His unparalleled dedication to our students through his time at Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES and in other local school districts should serve as a testament to all. His visionary and innovative leadership has led to prosperous partnerships and major advancements in several educational areas from technology to business to the safety of our schools. His upcoming retirement will leave an enormous void in the landscape of the Mohawk Valley’s academia.”

Penny Mann, a science teacher at the Oriskany Central School District and New York State Master Teacher, added, “I am among the hundreds of fortunate educators to have grown as a direct result of his service. Mr. Mettelman served as my mentor and taught me new understandings about the needs of my students, my colleagues and our community. Most of my students don’t know Mr. Mettelman, but they frequently express appreciation for my service to them and that is a direct reflection of his investment in me!”

The other 2018 Leading EDGE Award honorees were Assured Information Security (AIS), Francis Behlmer of BNY Mellon, Masonic Medical Research Institute, Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees and Sherrill Manufacturing. Harold “Tom” Clark, Jr. was the recipient of the Christopher Destito Award.
