The SkillsUSA chapter at the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES earned several recognitions, including a first place gold medal at this year’s New York State Leadership and Skills Conference in Syracuse recently.

Nineteen students attended the state conference and because of their hard work and dedication, were awarded the Gold Chapter of Excellence award. The students will be recognized at the national conference in Louisville, Ky., in June.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) team won the first place gold medal in the competition. The team is comprised of Nicollette Cardinal, Holland Patent; Madison Decker, Waterville; and Andrew Tilbe, Waterville.

Earning the bronze medal in Job Interview Skills was Jamilex Neris, Utica City School District. She competed against 38 contestants and was one of six who received a call back for a second interview.

Also during the conference, Alexis Newbury, criminal justice, Utica, was sworn in as the 2018-19 SkillsUSA Area 2 Vice President. Stiven Carrasco and Kathleen Martin completed their New York state officer duties during the conference by opening and closing the ceremonies to more than 3,300 individuals.

“The Skills USA competition allows our students to not only demonstrate their knowledge and competency but also provides them opportunities to collaborate with business and industry partners and network with peers across the state,” said David Stayton, principal of the Career and Technical Education Center. “The Syracuse competition provides them a platform to showcase their knowledge and skills and network with professionals in the field and other students in similar programs throughout the state.”
