Bridges to Roll Out Positivity Project During Pep Rally
The Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES Bridges (special education) program will roll out the Positivity Project to students and staff during a pep rally on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018.
As the first school in the Mohawk Valley and the first special education school in the country to participate in The Positivity Project, Bridges will hold a pep rally to introduce the 24 character strengths to the school community beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Gym at the OHM BOCES in New Hartford, N.Y.
“We are proud to be one of 200 schools in the country participating in The Positivity Project,” said Lisa Rizzo, coordinator of special education at OHM BOCES. “We felt that the message that ‘Other People Matter’ and the 24 character strengths and virtues that the program is modeled on was so important and something that our students and staff could use in their daily lives. We were looking for a program to help us teach our students empathy. When Tim Rowland, administrative intern, proposed the Positivity Project, Ellen Mahanna, principal, and myself immediately embraced the idea. We fully supported training a core group of teachers and social workers.”
The Positivity Project was co-founded by two graduates of West Point who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. After leaving active duty, the two found themselves wanting to make a big impact on America’s youth by empowering them to build strong relationships by seeing the good in others and themselves. Their inspiration came from Dr. Chris Peterson, a founder of positive psychology.
The program, which is based on 24 character strengths and virtues, such as integrity, kindness, humor, began with one partner school in Liverpool, N.Y., in 2015 to more than 180 partner schools in 13 states.
BOCES serves the following component school districts: Brookfield, Clinton, Holland Patent, New Hartford, New York Mills, Oriskany, Remsen, Sauquoit Valley, Utica, Waterville, Westmoreland and Whitesboro.
