State Police Demonstration Shows Seat Belts Save Lives

New York State Troopers visited the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES Career and Technical Education Center on November 17 to reinforce the important yet sometimes overlooked slogan “Seat Belts Save Lives.”

Troopers spent the day at CTEC which was highlighted by demonstrations using a Seat Belt Convincer and Rollover Simulator. The Seat Belt Convincer is an educational tool that allows riders to experience force, up to five times their body weight, similar to that of a 5-10 mph crash. The Convincer allows the rider to experience the surprising amount of force generated with such a low-speed collision and to gain respect for the benefit that a seat belt can provide.

The Rollover Simulator shows students what happens in a crash when the driver and passengers are not wearing seat belts. The vehicle replicates traveling at 40 miles per hour then spins as if it were involved in an accident with a rollover. Crash dummies are in the front and back seats of the car.

When the occupants are not wearing seat belts, CTEC students were able to see how violently passengers are thrown about inside the car and actually fly out of the windows. The unique demonstration also showed how an individual in the vehicle could actually be tossed within the car and cause injury to other passengers as well.

The Troopers added to the displays with excellent presentations for each demonstration and then fielded a number of questions from students.

The time and efforts of the New York State Troopers were greatly appreciated and extremely beneficial for everyone in CTEC!

The presentation was sponsored by the OHM BOCES chapter of SkillsUSA.
