School Library System Hosts Annual Leatherstocking Conference
On October 26, the Oneida/Herkimer School Library System partnered with the Madison-Oneida (MO) BOCES and Otsego Northern Catskills (ONC) BOCES to host the annual Leatherstocking Conference at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Utica.
This year marked 38 years of the conference, which was attended by local librarians, educators, authors and more. The conference gives local librarians the opportunity to meet and learn with and from their regional peers. It also allows them to gain new professional insights into the field of school librarianship, showcase projects, share ideas and collaborate with others in their field.
The keynote speaker for the conference was Nikki Grimes, a New York Times bestselling children’s book author and the recipient of several awards. Her books include “Garvey’s Choice,” “Southwest Sunrise,” “Bronx Masquerade” and more.
Alicia Klepeis, the author of more than 190 children’s books, was the featured speaker for the conference. Her session, titled “Around the World in 200 Books: An Author’s Perspective,” focused on how to make nonfiction fun for all learners.
Grimes and Klepeis both held book signing sessions so that local librarians could bring signed copies of different titles back to their schools.
