New York Mills Union Free School District

The New York Mills Union Free School District is comprised of a single, K-12 campus including a bus garage and athletic fields for football, baseball/softball, field hockey and track.

The District has an enrollment of approximately 559 students (330 in K-6 and 229 in 7-12) with 63 instructional staff, 34 support staff and two administrators. The professional staff consists of grade-level classroom teachers and certified instructors for art, music, foreign languages in both Spanish and French, physical education, library, academic intervention services, social work, psychology and speech/language services. Staff continually participate in local and regional professional development to stay current in curriculum and instruction methods. The entire school has state-of-the-art technology and the educational program of the New York Mills Union Free School District is rich in opportunities for everyone to succeed. U.S. News & World Report ranked New York Mills Elementary School 342nd out of 2,831 elementary schools in New York state in its 2022 Best K-8 Schools rankings.

In addition to core academic courses, students can take a variety of electives and distance learning courses such as psychology, sociology, computer technology and American Sign Language. Learning opportunities also exist for advanced students with options including Advanced Placement and dual enrollment college courses. Among graduating seniors in 2021, 89 percent went on to post-secondary education.

The New York Mills UFSD boasts an extensive sports and extracurricular activity program with a full complement of interscholastic teams, intramural activities and co-curricular clubs available. Numerous athletic teams qualify for state scholar-athlete awards annually.

The District’s music and art programs are very successful and provide excellent opportunities for all students
K-12, including band, chorus and drama.

The District recently completed a $1,543,750 Capital Project, which included the installation of accessible metal bleachers, a press box, a student-designed playground, a new marquee sign and paving improvements. The District is now entering into an Energy Performance Contracts (EPC) to update lighting for classrooms and include controls for building operations. A proposed Capital Outlay for the 2022-23 school year includes installation of fencing around the District’s bus lot for security purposes. The New York Mills UFSD is one of at least 145 school districts and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in New York state to receive the Utica National Insurance Group’s School Safety Excellence Award for 2022 at the Titanium with Honors level.

Residents have a strong history of pride and involvement in their school and community, and celebrated the District’s 100th Birthday during the 2013-14 school year.
