SYLLABUS

PROGRAM: COSMETOLOGY

TEACHERS: Mrs. Keefer, Mrs. Poniktera, Ms. Weakley

LENGTH OF COURSE: 1000 HOURS (includes summer)

COURSE OVERVIEW: The Cosmetology program is a two-year program designed to provide students with marketable skills to enter the field of cosmetology. Once the skills are acquired, students perform services for customers in a salon setting in the classroom.

MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT AND/OR CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Students will be required to wear appropriate dress including a black smock and closed toed shoes.
  • Students must purchase a Cosmetology kit and have all supplies in class everyday.
  • When you leave the program – it’s your responsibility to make arrangements to pick up your kit etc. (within one week). Any articles left behind will be discarded.
  • 2 Inch three ring binder
     

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT:

For each successfully completed year, you can receive four credits. These can be eight Career and Technical Education (CTE) credits or seven CTE credits and up to three academic credits including English 12, Math and Science. The combination of CTE and ACADEMIC credits cannot exceed eight credits. See your home school counselor for more information.

A handbook is available in the Career and Technical Education Office and should be referenced for complete policies and procedure information.

SAFETY:

Oneida County Career and Technical Center is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment for all students. Program representatives and students will comply with all applicable federal, state and local occupational health safety laws. A student must be continually aware of the danger that is presented with tool and chemical usage. 


CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION OBJECTIVES:

STUDENTS WILL:

  1. Participate in hands on practical work experiences.
  2. Become acquainted with a wide range of career opportunities within a career field.
  3. Become better prepared for the world of work, or further education.
  4. Demonstrate personal attributes required for successful relationships with employers, customers and fellow employees.
  5. Use appropriate academic skills to solve applied problems in the career field.
  6. Learn proper work ethics including appropriate job behavior and responsibilities.
  7. Practice approved safety procedures in various work situations.
     

INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY:

Instructions will be application-based. This course requires extensive student participation and completion of specific job activities. Students will work independently or in groups to complete several projects and tasks. Assignments will require students to draw upon academic skills in mathematics, science, technology, and language arts.

  • Hair and scalp disorders and diseases
  • Chemistry-as applied to Cosmetology
  • Shampoos, rinses, conditioners, and treatments
  • Haircutting and shaping
  • Hairstyling
  • Ethnic hair care
  • Chemical waving and restructuring
  • Hair coloring, highlights and lowlights
  • Nail care and procedures
  • Skin care procedures
  • Waxing procedures
  • Business plans, inventory, simulation of salon set up
     

CLASSROOM POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

ATTENDANCE:

All students must call the instructor whenever absent. This attendance policy reinforces quality work ethics, as well as allows the teacher to better assist the student when he/she returns. Students are expected to make-up assignments when absent.

  • Students must sign into class daily with their own signature for attendance verification.
     

PROCEDURE:

Students must call teacher when they will not be class.

HOMEWORK:

Students are assigned homework each day; and they are graded on each assignment. Students will receive a zero for any incomplete assignment. When students are absent they are still responsible for the assignment.

GRADING:

The mark or grade the student receives is for work completed and will be based on the following:

 

Knowledge -----20% - Test, homework, oral and written presentations, notebook, bell work.

Skills ------------35% - Observation of student demonstrating specific skills and tasks, applying knowledge, finished project assessments and performance tests.

Work Ethics -------30% - Work ethic, behaviors and safety practices.

Academics ------15% - Integrated Math, Science and English
