New Visions: Health Professions
The New Visions: Health Professions program is open to seniors who plan to enroll in post-secondary two- or four-year colleges to study in a health-related field. Students in the program explore a variety of health occupations on
site at the local hospital and other health facilities. Students develop competencies useful in a wide range of careers within the health field.
Through observations within various departments, students learn what is required of a health professional on a daily basis. The program delivers instruction in English 12, Participation in Government and Economics.
Additionally, students in New Visions Health receive
instruction through MVCC in College Foundations Seminar
and Medical Terminology for Health Professionals.

my name is kimberly petronella i'm the
0:02
health occupations
0:04
coordinator which means i'm the new
0:05
visions health instructor and i
0:07
coordinate the nurse assisting program
0:09
i'm also the work-based learning
0:10
coordinator here at united her madison
0:12
boces
0:12
i've been teaching here this is my 24th
0:14
year i'm a former student of an idaho
0:17
madison boces i graduated from here in
0:18
1988 with my lpn
0:20
so i'm truly a big big proponent of
0:24
career and technical education and where
0:26
it can lead you into the future
0:27
i have worked all over the place i've
0:29
worked in long-term care acute care
0:32
critical care emergency care so i kind
0:35
of have a little dabble of everything
0:36
when
0:37
from my career base for my i guess we
0:39
would call them my qualifications i'm
0:41
not even sure
0:43
welcome to the new visions health
0:46
occupations classroom actually this is
0:48
the lab portion
0:49
of the classroom new visions health is a
0:51
senior only
0:52
program where students can come and
0:54
explore different health careers
0:56
nameless all different types of health
0:58
careers and they also learn government
1:01
economics
1:01
we also have english 101 through mvcc
1:06
with our english instructor we have
1:07
personal finance with our math
1:09
instructor both of those are college
1:10
level courses where they can earn
1:12
college credit
1:13
we also incorporated medical terminology
1:15
through mvcc which the students will
1:17
learn
1:18
here and they can also get three credits
1:20
for that through mvcc
1:22
and then they we also are doing college
1:24
foundations
1:25
so if they do attend mvcc that class
1:27
will be
1:28
done for them so they're going to do a
1:30
lot of college prep
1:31
work they also do government and
1:34
economics in here and they get their
1:35
english 12 credit
1:37
on top of learning health concepts so
1:38
it's a very busy classroom it requires a
1:41
student to be
1:42
ready to take on a lot of extra
1:44
responsibility but do it in a fun
1:46
way it's not overwhelming it just learns
1:49
it
1:50
teaches the student how to become ready
1:53
to schedule
1:53
themselves and properly organize
1:55
themselves and prepare them to go on to
1:57
college which many of them are
1:59
so here in my lab this is where the
2:00
students will work with me
2:02
and what they'll do is they will learn
2:05
basic nursing skills they'll work with
2:07
their partners
2:08
and each of them will take turns
2:10
learning different nursing basic nursing
2:12
skills
2:13
and then they'll practice with one
2:14
another and then they get competencies
2:16
which means that's when i watch them do
2:18
this skill
2:19
by working in the lab what will help
2:21
them especially students
2:22
are going off to nursing school pt ot
2:25
any of those programs they're going to
2:27
have a nice
2:29
basic knowledge base of what some skill
2:32
skills are that we do with our patients
2:34
so when they go to college they'll
2:36
feel more ready they'll feel more
2:37
comfortable so when they go into their
2:39
labs at the college level
2:41
they would have seen that before they
2:42
would have participated in that before
2:44
i'm comfortable with that and it might
2:46
give them a step up versus other
2:48
students who've never had the lab
2:49
exposure that the students would have
2:51
had so we work in here
2:53
as often as possible you know in in
2:57
in between doing all of our course
2:58
theory work then
3:00
they wear their lab coats both here in
3:03
the classroom
3:04
and when we go out clinically when we go
3:06
out clinically we go out three days a
3:07
week
3:08
on tuesday wednesdays and thursdays and
3:10
we go out to local hospitals
3:12
uh hopefully once the large hospital is
3:15
ready to go in a few years we'll be
3:16
going there of course
3:18
to the larger hospital we also go to
3:20
ambulance companies
3:22
local nursing homes a bunch of other
3:24
different places for internship
3:26
so the students can work with
3:28
professionals in the field
3:29
and learn how to be successful in those
3:32
different careers
3:33
but also give them a wide variety of
3:34
different health careers so
3:36
they aren't pigeon holed into one thing
3:38
because many kids really don't know what
3:39
they want to do so we're trying to help
3:41
them find that way
3:42
or maybe it will solidify exactly what
3:45
they want to do
3:46
this year i have a bunch of students who
3:48
are very interested in nursing
3:49
so of course they're really into working
3:51
in the lab and doing
3:52
all the lab skills but i also have a
3:54
bunch of kids who are interested in
3:55
therapy and they're really excited to
3:57
learn all the lab skills too because
3:58
those are skills they are
4:00
going to use when they get out into the
4:02
world of work
4:03
hopefully you know following college so
4:06
we do have a classroom side i can show
4:08
you that too
4:09
so in the classroom side and
4:12
this could change i could be in a whole
4:14
new room next year you never know
4:16
so for this year this is our classroom
4:18
size
4:19
um the students all work over here we
4:22
have chromebooks they
4:24
log on to them we do stuff both
4:27
online and in person because we do both
4:30
of those
4:31
interchangeably so the students will
4:33
work doing a daily journal
4:35
opening up different lecture style notes
4:38
we do lecture over here actually more i
4:40
call it class discussion because we try
4:42
to discuss together
4:44
we do a lot of projects we just finished
4:46
doing a debate
4:47
so i make sure we do a lot of group work
4:49
i think that's very important that the
4:50
students work together and develop that
4:52
teamwork skill
4:53
so that they're able to easily transfer
4:55
that when they go on to college and then
4:57
definitely when they go on into the
4:58
workplace
5:00
we don't really work independently in
5:02
here we make sure it's a group
5:04
effort for everyone so when we're on
5:07
this side of the classroom or this side
5:08
of the room
5:09
this is where all the theory takes place
5:11
primarily
5:12
a lot of our group work takes place over
5:15
here
5:16
when we're in the lab where i showed you
5:17
previously that's when we're doing our
5:19
skill base
5:20
activities our skill based work we
5:22
interchangeably use
5:24
online and in person like i said so the
5:26
students can feel comfortable because
5:28
in healthcare everything has pretty much
5:30
gone to the online
5:32
world of documentation and such what
5:36
that's pretty much my program what we do
5:43
here
