GENEVA, NY – The Smith Center for the Arts celebrates the start of the 2020-2021 academic year and salutes you who are making this very challenging year into a reality.
https://www.oneida-boces.org/cms/Workspace/Section/Section.aspx?DomainID=311
This school year, flexibility is the name of the game and The Smith has responded with a wide range of virtual ArtSmart performing arts experiences for students. All offerings tie directly to New York State learning standards and come with study guides and supplemental activities that prepare students for the experience and help them unpack it afterwards. ArtSmart experiences will be offered a la carte, meaning more choices at lower cost.
The Smith’s 2020-2021 ArtSmart program offers:
•Experiences at every grade level
•Both pre-recorded and live streamed performances to give teachers scheduling flexibility
•Workshops, guided pre-show and post-show activities, and/or talkbacks with the artists
Some examples of experiences that will be available via the virtual format are:
THE MERMAID THEATRE OF NOVA SCOTIA
Target grades Pre-K-3rd
The company that tells classic stories (The Hungry Caterpillar, Goodnight Moon, Runaway Bunny) with inventive puppetry announces a “digital residency” featuring excerpts from their many shows, along with demonstrations. Young children will learn how puppets are able to show emotion and how to express emotions using their hands as puppets.
DAVID GONZALEZ
Target grades Pre-K-3rd
Critically acclaimed and award-winning artist David Gonzalez combines live music with compelling drama and multimedia. His productions include fairy tales, epic myths, fables, and community voices.
THE NATIONAL PLAYERS THEATRE WORKSHOPS
Target grades: 6-12
The National Players will present virtual workshops catered to the age, skill levels, and abilities of the students. Video footage is available from their performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and As You Like It to complement the learning experience. Workshop topics include “Making Shakespeare Your Own,” “Text in Context,” and “Word in Action: Playwriting.”
LIVING VOICES
Target grades: 6-12
These interactive, single-person historical programs blend video, audio and personal discussion to illuminate some of the most important stories of our shared global history. Live Q&A sessions with the performer are also available. Programs topics include the United Farm Workers Movement, The Civil Rights Movement, the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War Two, and the role of African-American soldiers during the Revolutionary War.
The Smith anticipates adding productions to this roster of performances as the fall unfolds. For more information, contact us at artsmart@thesmith.org or go here.
The Smith thanks Lyons National Bank and FairGame for their support of the ArtSmart program.

Length of Program: 30 minutes=====================================================================================
We all know these are "interesting times".
Have your teachers told you what they're looking for from Arts in Education? If so, let me know.
Meanwhile, I've reinvented my "Virtual Author Visits" to give students (and teachers) a interactive and enriching experience. Hopefully next year we'll be back to a more normal normal.
We've tried to make sure that all the information is current and up to date on the BOCES website.
Web Page markbinderbooks.com
but the email mark@markbinder.com
Finally, I'm attaching a one-page information sheet about the programs.
Will you please distribute this to schools in your region? If you need a short blurb: Virtual Author Classroom Visits by writer and storyteller Mark Binder encourage reading, listening and writing. Age adjusted for grades PK-2, 3-5, 6-9 and 10-12. Contact me or my associate, Beth beth@markbinderbooks.com
Mark Binder’s writing workshops are quick and revolutionary. In each workshop every student will learn Mark’s “method” and by the end produce the beginning of a first draft story. In a very short period, he:
• Teaches students the basics of story structure
• Outlines the elements that go into a story
• Teaches an improvisational method to unlock creativity
• Sets the students on task to write a short story
• Coaches them, and trains teachers to coach them
• Teaches how to weave the elements of a story to a satisfying conclusion========================================================================================
