Appearance Enhancement includes the specialties of barbering, cosmetology, esthetics, nail specialty, natural hair styling or waxing services. You must obtain a license to own, control or operate an Appearance Enhancement Business in New York State.

Barber
A barber is a person whose occupation is mainly to cut, dress, groom, style and shave men's and boys' hair or beards.

Cosmetologist
A cosmetologist performs cosmetic and relaxing skin treatments on the face and body. They provide various treatments to improve the skin and beauty-enhancement services such as makeup application, scalp and facial treatments, hair styling, and manicures and pedicures.

Esthetician
An esthetician is a trained technician who specializes in skin beautification. Estheticians (sometimes spelled aestheticians) are not medical healthcare providers. They perform cosmetic skin treatments such as facials, superficial chemical peels, body treatments, and waxing.

Natural hair stylist means an individual who engages in the practice of natural hair styling but no other branch of cosmetology in a licensed facility. They provide services to the hair including shampooing, dressing, twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, or braiding.
