Light, Sound & Communication
-
In this first grade unit on light and sound, students will guide the learning process, starting by examining phenomena which lead to questions like: “How does sound travel?” “What makes objects visible?” “How can light change, and how is the sun both helpful and harmful?”
Through hands-on inquiries, students will explore patterns in light visibility and sound vibrations, uncovering how light and sound behave. To bring their learning to life, students will use their newfound knowledge to design their own communication devices, making this unit both interactive and inventive!
Our Sun and the Night Sky
-
In this first grade unit, students will start their space exploration with phenomena that will generate questions like: How does sunlight change throughout the day? When can we see other stars? Why does the moon appear differently each night? What patterns can we observe in the sun, moon, and stars from our location?
Through engaging inquiries, students will uncover aspects of space in relation to the Earth. They’ll grasp the concept of the universe, understand the importance of directions, and explore the Sun’s daily and seasonal roles. Students will also delve into the world of stars and constellations and discover why the Moon’s appearance changes each night.
Animals and Survival
-
In the first-grade "Animals and Survival" unit, students will explore the structure and function of various animals and how their body parts help them survive, grow, and reproduce. Through real world phenomena and hands-on investigations, they’ll discover unique adaptations and ask questions like: How do animals use body coverings for protection? How do behaviors and inherited traits aid survival? How can humans learn from animal traits? This unit fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of how animals thrive in their environments.
The Human Body
-
In this unit, first grade students will embark on an exploration of the body’s major systems—the skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems. Through hands-on activities, students will investigate the key functions of each system. Along the way, they’ll also learn the importance of a healthy diet and physical activity, gaining a deeper understanding of how to take care of their bodies. This interactive unit offers an exciting journey into human biology that inspires curiosity and healthy habits!
