• Are you ready to become a substitute for a district? Each participating district hires its own substitutes. To apply to the district and be board-approved, all employees of a school district must be fingerprinted for the NYSED OSPRA Database. Districts that substitutes apply to will direct them as to where fingerprinting can be completed.

Minimum Requirements

  • The minimum requirements vary by school district.  

    • Substitute teachers must have proof of 60 college credits, an associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree, license or certification, depending on the school district.
    • Teacher assistants need proof of high school diploma, a GED diploma, AAS diploma or a New York State Teaching Assistant Certificate, depending on the district.
    • Nurses must have an RN and/or LPN license and current CPR training.
