Project Length: Two periods as a class and two more as needed by students

I. Issues for the Teacher
A. What NYS Standard are you working towards in this project?
Standard Health, Physical Education and Home Economics #2: Students will acquire knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.
Key Idea Intermediate Health Education students will demonstrate personally and socially responsible behaviors.
B. What skill (C-DOS/Information Literacy, etc.) do you want your students to develop as they work on this project?
C-DOS #2: Integrated Learning: Students will understand and demonstrate how academic content is applied in real world and workplace settings
C. Describe in some detail what you want your students to do and/or produce in this project that will demonstrate that they are moving toward the standard and developing their skill.

In groups of two, students will use library resources (internet, magazines, books, health encyclopedia, and community resources) to gather information regarding the prevention or awareness of the HIV virus or AIDS.

An informational poster will be produced and presented to classmates with necessary explanations.
Posters may be produced using cut pictures from magazines, internet or drawn neatly by hand. It should be colorful and engaging.


II. Issues for the Library Media Specialist
A. What instructional strategies will you use to move students toward the standard(s) and skill(s) above?
  • Orientation and discussion of searching strategies to be used by students when searching the Card Catalog (OPAC), Middle Search (Magazine database) and Infoseek (the Internet).
  • Demonstration of how to log on and search the internet using Infoseek using natural language. When sights are located discuss some guidelines to determine appropriate and accurate sites by looking at the web addresses.
B. What material/technical support will you provide for the project?
  • Library text resources-Poster board
  • Magazines for cutting
  • Markers, scissors, glue, tape
  • Bookmarked sites on Internet
III. Issues for the Teacher and Library Media Specialist
A. What is the question driving the project?
How can people avoid HIV infection?
B. The Challenge for Students (What product do you want students to create that will provide evidence they're learning the standard and skill?)

Working in pairs to gather information on how HIV spreads and how to prevent its transmission.

  • With a partner, create a poster which shows how we can prevent the spread of HIV.
  • Present the poster to the classroom with clear explanations shared by partners.
C. Product Criteria (What criteria for a product of "good" quality?)

Create a neat and accurate poster. The audience should have an understanding of what you're trying to say without words.
D. Standards Criteria (What evidence is needed to determine that the desired standard is being achieved?)
  • Present their posters along with an explanation.
  • Respond accurately to classmates' questions.
  • Demonstrate individual accountability through a work log.
