Oneida/Herkimer School Library System received the federal IMLS grant funding for their three-year project: "Embracing Excellence: School Libraries for the New Century" in September of 2005. This grant forged partnerships between O/H BOCES, 8 participating school districts, the University at Buffalo, and 10 students who will complete the New York State Education Department (NYSED) approved Library Media Specialist (LMS) certification program. The grant addresses the need for certified library media specialists in our area. All parties have worked to eliminate the barriers created by location, the program will use distance learning and local resources to meet the conditions of the grant. There are 5 major components in this grant: scholarships for the MLS candidates, technology institutes, leadership development, mentoring, formal academic coursework. The candidates will complete the program in the summer of 2008 bringing ten new dynamic library media specialist to the work force in the O/H BOCES school districts.
