This service exposes students to different performing arts
and integrates the arts within the curriculum. Through BOCES,
performances are scheduled at participating schools. Programs
are available for students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
In cooperation with the Utica Symphony, concert tickets and other
educational opportunities are provided to area students. Tickets
for other performances also may be funded through this COSER.
Also available through Performing Arts is the Arts in Education
Institute, which promotes cooperation between teachers and artists
and brings that cooperation into the classroom. This program integrates
arts into the classroom and develops student skills of analysis
and perception. During the summer, participating teachers attend
a two-week institute which includes workshop activities, performances
and discussions about integration of the arts and learning. During
the school year, teachers bring this knowledge into the classroom
and team up with artists to plan units of study around performances
and exhibitions. The Institute provides participating districts
with an integrated approach to arts education modeled after the
Lincoln Center Institute.
