Keeping a Weather Journal

This lesson plan can be easily adjusted to your particular classroom situation. You can have the students fill it out at home or at school. You can determine your own measurements by making the weather instruments yourself or by using an additional media source (newspaper, internet, television). 
Objective:  To have student keep a running record of the daily weather through visual observation
Materials:
  • My Weather Journal worksheet
  • Pencil
Procedure: 
1. Discuss with students that they will be keeping a journal about the weather for one week's time (the length of time can easily be adjusted).
2.  Handout the worksheet.
3.  Explain to the students how and when the worksheet is to be filled out.
4.  It is important to have the students complete the worksheet at approximately the same time every day.
Summary Questions:
1.  Did temperature increase or decrease during the collection period?
2.  Did precipitation increase or decrease during the collection period?
3.  Did barometric pressure increase or decrease during the collection period?
4.  What relationship did you observe between temperature and air pressure?
5.  What relationship did you observe between precipitation and air pressure?
6.  What was the average temperature?
7.  What was the average air pressure?
Extension:
Using TV weather forecasts, make a chart showing the daily high and low temperatures for a one week period of time.
i.  What is the daily difference in the high and low temperatures?
ii.  What was the weekly average temperature?
iii.  What was the weekly barometric pressure?
