Model

Objective:
Students will gain a better understanding of the relationship
(in size) between the Earth and Moon.

Materials: A
basketball, tennis ball, baseball, soccer ball and a golf
ball.

Problem: If
a basketball were used to represent the Earth, which ball
would best represent the Moon?

Procedure:
- Explain
to the students that the Earth’s diameter is 7,973 miles
and the moon’s diameter is 2,160 miles.
- Have the students determined how much larger the Earth is compared to the moon.
- Have the students determine the diameter of the all given balls. (They should come up with: basketball 9.6 inches, soccer ball 8.8 inches, baseball 2.9 inches, tennis ball 2.7 inches, and the golf ball is .7 inches.)
- Ask the students “Which ball best represents the earth?” (Answer: the basketball)
- Ask the students “Which ball best represents to Moon?” (Answer: the tennis ball - see
chart)
