Career Options Programs
(Special Needs Occupational Education)

(Ungraded, one or more years based on individual needs and transition plan)

A customized and flexible career and technical education program for special needs students is provided through the Career Options Program at the Oneida BOCES Career and Technical Education Center.

Career Options provides opportunities to explore career areas, develop appropriate work habits and attitudes, and gain basic job skills through meaningful work-related hands-on experiences.

Within Career Options, there are three basic program options designed to meet the individual needs of each student. These program components provide flexible progression for students 16 to 20 years of age. One of the major strengths of this program is its ability to meet each student's particular career development needs. Depending on a student's academic, social and behavioral needs, he or she can enter, exit and reenter any program option as needed to progress to a student's career potential.

Students in Career Options are provided with a variety of support services to assist them in achieving their individual goals. Support services include vocational assessment, career counseling, supported work services, work study, job placement, and basic skills training.

All Career Options components feed into the work internship program at Sangertown Mall.

Career Options Program Course Offerings:

Career Options-Fundamentals
Career Options - Fundamentals
is a career and technical education preparation program designed to train special needs students in eight career and technical education areas. By matching interests and skills, a specific training program is individualized to each student. The program structure allows for easy entry, exit or reentry at any point to other Career Options programs depending on the individual case. As skills are taught, a major emphasis is placed on the student learning appropriate work behaviors, work habits, and work attitudes.

Students are assessed regularly and this information is used to adjust student programming as they progress through Career Options Fundamentals. This program can be a direct link to the world of work after graduation or lead to placement in other Career Options programs. Students in Career Options - Fundamentals may also participate in the Sangertown Square Career Options - Internship component.

Modules in Career Options - Fundamentals include:

  • Office Technology
  • Recycling Services
  • Food Services
  • Laundry Services
  • Stock Clerk
  • Transitional Skills
  • Manufacturing/Assembly
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Independent Living Skills

Career Options - PLUS

  • Career Options - Plus offers selected course offerings that provide students with disabilities the opportunity to receive basic instruction in Food Service and Auto Service Occupations. As with other Career Options programs, Plus students may enter, exit and reenter other Career Options programs depending on their particular needs. The two vocational educational courses taught in the Plus program include:
  • Food Service Occupations - This course is designed for students interested in fast food cooking in commercial establishments. Students learn theory and receive practical experience in quantity preparation for large groups and short-order cooking.
  • Auto Service Occupations - This course is designed for students interested in service and repairing all different systems in a car such as electrical, exhaust, cooling, transmission and brake systems.

Career Options - Internship Opportunities
Career Options - Internship Opportunities provides Career Options students the chance to gain real job experience in businesses located at Sangertown Mall. This five-week opportunity allows students to acquire job skills, enhance practical work skills for future employment while building their resume, and also provides work experience in the area of interest. Each student is assigned an employee mentor who guides the student's job skill development. An on-site BOCES instructional staff member monitors student progress and helps students achieve success in the work setting.

Students are selected to participate in the internship based on their attendance, attitude and interests. Students work in the fields of basic retailing, basic janitorial, materials handling, general kitchen, basic office work, grounds work, and auto service. Participating business sites at Sangertown include Hemstroughts, Taco Bell, Northern Reflections, Ruby Tuesday Restaurant, Saturday Matinee, Sangertown housekeeping and groundskeeping departments.
