Criminal Justice - Public Safety Careers

(Fire/EMS/Dispatch/Corrections)

One Year Program (Seniors Only)

This course is designed for high school seniors interested in a career in public safety. The new curriculum is designed for seniors as part of the Public and Private Security Operations program cluster. It will include training in fire fighting essentials (National Fire Protection Agency 1001), NYS First Responder, and APCO Telecommunications.

Once a student completes the program, he or she may need only to take the state examination in order to become a certified first responder. Students are also trained as 911 dispatchers, meeting the basic requirements for an entry level position. They will complete course work for the National Fire Protection Association and Protection Agency which can be carried on for certification and an associate's degree from Onondaga County Community College.

  • CPR and first aid certification
  • Job search and retention skills
  • State mandated 8 hour pre-employment security guard training certification
  • 40 hour APCO basic telecommunicator training certification

Starting Salary Range
$5.50 - $15.00 per hour
