What is a NTO?

A nontraditional occupation (NTO) is a career in which more than 75 percent of the workers are of one gender; for instance, police officer or child care worker.

A female police officer and a male child care worker are each pursuing nontraditional occupations.
Why consider a NTO?

• Suit yourself. When you choose a career based on your own abilities and interests, you are more likely to be motivated, satisfied, and successful. This is true whether you are male or female.
• Go for the gold. Today, no matter what your gender, you must prepare for economic self-sufficiency. Traditional “women’s jobs” are less likely than those usually held by men to allow you to support yourself. So a “man’s” job might be better for you.
• Take the challenge. An NTO allows you to challenge yourself by taking a job in a field not usually chosen by members of your gender—and earn good wages in the process.
• Stay the course. Traditional “men’s jobs” are often subject to economic and weather fluctuation, leading to layoffs. If you prefer to work inside, require a steady work schedule, or enjoy expressing yourself artistically, a job historically done by women could be your “perfect fit.”

Top ten reasons for choosing a nontraditional occupation:

10. Basing your job choice on your abilities and interests
9.   Balancing work, family, and friends
8.   Earning more in a nontraditional job
7.   Earning enough to get what you want from life
6.   Laying a solid foundation for your future
5.   Learning new ways of thinking
4.   Using your knowledge in high-skill, high-tech jobs
3.   Increasing your options in the 21st Century
2.   Exercising freedom of choice
1.   Succeeding in your career
What's in it for me?

Women who work in traditionally “male” jobs may gain these advantages:
• Higher salaries
• More benefits (medical, retirement)
• Greater advancement opportunities
• Increased job security
• Greater job satisfaction

As a woman considering an NTO, you might investigate engineering, automotive, electrical, law, construction, criminal justice, welding, conservation, outdoor power equipment, or drafting careers.

Men
may choose traditionally “female” jobs because they offer these benefits:
• Better work environment
• More stability
• Fixed hours
• Increased job satisfaction

If you are a man seeking the advantages an NTO provides, look into careers in nursing, office technology, child care, and cosmetology.
