Students Do Follow-up Lab Work
On
Dec. 19, students
in the New Visions Health Professions
program did a direct follow-up lab to a taped autopsy
they viewed via a videoconference. The students were given information concerning the circumstances surrounding the victim’s
death and attempted to determine the cause of death through the information obtained before the autopsy from patient information and research, during the autopsy, and from the tests
they conducted after the autopsy. The tests were to simulate blood and urine toxicology screenings for the presence of drugs in the body at the time of death. |

| They
students also performed lab
work to determine that if a victim was stabbed, what type of implement
was used. This experiment utilized a gel-like material covered by thick plastic that
mimicked muscle and skin, and students
attempted to figure out which ‘tool’,
including scissors, screwdriver, hammer, etc., made the entrance wound. The students were given handouts regarding the various types of wounds and their corresponding weapons. |
