This one-year program for seniors only offers students the
opportunity to explore the multiple aspects of veterinary science
and to explore career options in various areas of veterinary
services. Students receive 4 credits; 2 CTEC credits, 1 credit in
English, 1/2 credit in economics, and 1/2 credit in government.
General
areas of instruction for the New Visions: Veterinary Science
program include animal behavior, animal handling and restraint
techniques, species and breed identification, anatomy and
physiology, laboratory techniques, animal care procedures, and
animal health and disease.
Students
will participate in internship programs at various types of animal
care facilities to help them to determine which type or types of
animals they would like to work with more extensively. Internship
programs will also give students opportunities to demonstrate good
work attitudes, teamwork, and responsibility.
Students
will learn the basic knowledge and skills required for employment
at entry level positions in small animal hospitals, kennels, pet stores,
grooming facilities, and animal shelters.
The student will also be
prepared to work at a pet shop, farm, or animal sanctuary and will
be able to attend animals in zoos and agricultural facilities.
Students wishing to pursue a college education in animal care will
have been exposed to the basic knowledge and terminology needed
for majoring in animal sciences or veterinary medicine.
