Construction
Trades Students Do "Double Duty"
at New York Mills
The Construction
Trades class was called in a time of crisis last year when the wind blew the roof off a dug-out at
New York Mills High School and the class did such a nice job,
NYM called them back this fall to renovate the other
dug-out.

Last year, when the roof was ripped off, it took two courses of concrete block with it. Upon
arrival, the class also noticed that the frost had caused severe cracking to the concrete block wall.
To repair the dug-out, the Construction
Trades class had to peel off what was left of the remaining last two top courses of block, cut and install rebar in the cavities of the cracked wall, fill the cavities with concrete, lay up two courses of new concrete block, reinforce the top course by using beam block and running a continuous rim of reinforcement rod around the perimeter, and then filling the entire top course with concrete.
They placed anchor bolts to fasten the wood sill plate to the concrete wall and made a new carrying beam and rafters.
They also put plywood on the roof and then installed new corrugated steel roofing.

The students applied and gained knowledge in the areas of: estimating, planning, demolition, measuring, block construction, rafter lay-out, sheathing installation, steel roofing installation, safety at the work site, team work and dedication.

This off-campus work experience proved to be an excellent learning tool for the Construction Trades students.
