School districts are required under the Federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act to inspect and sample each building for asbestos containing materials. A written asbestos management plan must be kept on file in each building and be made available to the staff and public upon request. Documentation of initial inspection and triennial reports must be sent to the New York State Education Department.

Six-month surveillance reports must also be written for all assumed or confirmed asbestos-containing materials. The six-month surveillance reports must be kept with the district's management plan. The asbestos maintenance service provides all of the above, along with mandated asbestos awareness training for custodial and maintenance personnel.

This office also provides the technical expertise required to maintain compliance with New York State's Industrial Code Rule 56, OSHA and AHERA. Three-year complete re-inspections are also included in this service. This program is part of the Health and Safety Service.
